Legal basis is the amended Trademarks Law of 1999 that shall be read in conjunction with the original Law No. 33 of 1952, as one law. The latest amendment of the Jordanian Trademark's Law dates 2007.Trademark protection is obtained by registration.Jordan is a member of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property since July 17, 1972

 Requirements: 

  • The name, nationality, address and occupation of the applicant. 
  • A list of the goods and the corresponding classes to be covered by the application.
  • A Power of Attorney signed, notarized and legalized up to the Jordanian Consulate at your end.
  • A certified priority document, if priority is to be claimed.
Procedure:
  • The trademark application are filed with the Patent Office.
  • The application process includes a formal examination, an examination of distinctiveness and a search for prior trademarks.
  • Once a trademark application is filed, it is examined as to its registrability and existence of prior rights. 
  • Following the successful examination, the trademark application is published in the Patent Gazette.
  • An opposition to the registration of a trademark should be prosecuted before the Registrar by a lawyer within 3 months as of the date of publication.
  • If no objection by a 3rd party, a registration certificate will be issued by Intellectual Property Department.
  • The processing time from first filing to registration or first office action is approx. 8 to 12 months.

Duration and Renewal: A trademark registration is valid for 10 years from the date of application or from the priority date. The registration is renewable for periods of 10 years each.
